Background of the Study
Traditional institutions in Nigeria have played a significant role in resolving conflicts, especially in regions with ethnic, political, or religious tensions. In Gusau LGA, Zamfara State, the Emir’s mediation efforts have been central to maintaining peace and resolving local disputes (Haruna & Bala, 2024). Traditional rulers, like the Emir, hold cultural, spiritual, and political authority, which enables them to intervene effectively in conflicts, even in areas with limited state presence. In recent years, the role of traditional institutions in conflict resolution has gained increasing attention, especially with the rise in violent conflicts in the northwestern region of Nigeria. Gusau has witnessed numerous conflicts, ranging from inter-communal clashes to political violence. This study evaluates the Emir’s mediation efforts, exploring how traditional conflict resolution mechanisms contribute to peacebuilding and governance.
